Hotel Dieu Hospital parking expansion project

WHAT is involved?
In May 2008, Hotel Dieu Hospital put the shovel in the ground to begin expanding the Chown Memorial Parking Garage, located on Brock Street directly opposite the hospital. Earlier in the year, the hospital purchased the garage from the City of Kingston and negotiated a long-term lease for the land on which it sits.

The expansion project will create 200 additional parking spaces and an overhead pedestrian bridge linking the garage and hospitala key enhancement that will dramatically improve the safety and comfort of pedestrians making their way to Hotel Dieu across busy Brock Street.

As well, the project includes dedicated bicycle and small car parking areas within the garage and the creation of 5,000 square feet of new space in an adjacent, hospital-owned complex that will house Hotel Dieu services plus the community agency Street Health.

WHY is this expansion needed?

While not part of the redevelopment plan funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care, the garage project is a vital step in preparing for the move of 70,000 to 100,000 new outpatient visits to Hotel Dieu from Kingston General Hospital within the next 18 to 24 months - a 35 percent increase in patient traffic flow. More immediately, about 6,000 new visits will be moving from KGH by the fall of 2008.

WHEN will the expansion be completed?
Hotel Dieu expects to have about 200 more parking spaces in place by November 2008. New elevators in the parking garage should be ready by January 2009 and the skywalk is slated for use by February 2009.

HOW will the project affect current garage users?
The parking garage will remain open throughout the expansion project. However, changes to traffic flow in the garage will occur as a result of construction work:

  • From now to November 2008, the garage entrance is relocated to the east exit lane, near the kiosk.
  • There is one entry lane and one exit lane at the kiosk.
  • Permit holders, please note: When you approach the entry/exit gates, if the gate is raised you must still wave your card at the reader so the entry/exit is recorded. If you don't, you may have difficulty at your next entry/exit. The system must see an entry to allow an exit and vice versa.
  • Drivers are asked to please follow the posted signage and directional arrows.
